Development and new applications of the Integrative Levels Classification

Abstract

The Integrative Levels Classification (ILC) international research team is keeping to develop the system and to test its application. After publishing the second edition (ILC2) in SKOS format, the Developing Version is progressively being refined and is expected to be published in the coming years as ILC3. It features more consistent and better defined facet types, including bound, parallel and free facets, as illustrated in the updated online guide "How ILC works". More introductory documentation and tools are planned, including video tutorials and an online classmark builder. Application to the allergy domain provided an opportunity to compare top-down and bottom-up approaches in knowledge organization (Trzmielewski & Gnoli 2023). Deep use of freely faceted classmarks can now be appreciated by the online demonstrator Traditional Europe, where 65 videos on folk celebrations from YouTube can be searched and browsed (Gnoli et al. 2023). Research has begun on the classification of ethnical groups and racism issues, a sensible domain where a general classification faces obvious challenges (see Barcellos d'Almeida & Campos in this meeting). Classes of bulk matter, celestial objects, rocks and landforms are being revised as for terminology and hierarchies by Bawden and Gnoli. Another intriguing thread is the application of ILC fundamental categories, expressed by numerals or colours, to semantic networks as a tool in language acquisition by children according to the MaVi method. Our first thoughts suggest that this is a promising opportunity to extend the principles of knowledge organization to the field of education as recommended by Soergel (2013).
